Hello Friends,
Recently in a middle school Math class, I observed the teacher ask a student for the answer to a problem, and without looking up he said, “I don’t know”.
Instead of immediately moving on to a student that could answer the question, she encouragingly said,
“This is important to learn, and in a minute, you will know how to answer it”.
Every teacher has heard it—that dreaded phrase: "I don’t know." It can become a habit for some students.
But what if you could turn “I don’t know” into a learning opportunity?
How It Works:
When a student says, "I don’t know," don’t move on.
Instead:
🔹 Call on another student for the answer.
🔹 Return to the original student and have them repeat the correct response.
🔹 In a more rigorous approach, give a hint or cue to guide the student to the answer.
Why It Works:
✔️ Prevents students from checking out of learning.
✔️ Builds persistence and accountability.
✔️ Reinforces that effort leads to success.
✔️ Boosts confidence—students realize they can get to the right answer.
